How Good Are We, Really?
March 19th Wednesday 2025, 1:00 PM
We often think we are better than we truly are, holding a grandiose idea of our morality. We believe that because we were kind when nothing challenged us, this makes us “benevolent.”
We compare ourselves to Mr. Y, whose morality is seen as quixotic or as the standard of excellence in society. Meanwhile, we condemn Mr. X, saying, "Oh, Mr. X is so evil—the world would be better without him." Yet, we often live up only to our outward appearance because deep down, we know that what lies within us falls far below even our lowest words or most public behavior.
The truth is—my truth and my thoughts—we never truly know the depths of someone's character or how "bad" they are because that is between them and their God. Even in our quiet moments with God, we, as humans, downplay our own sinful behaviors. Though we may confess, we often do so with a false tone, softening the gravity of our actions. We judge others by their outward actions but excuse our own faults because we are aware of our intentions and inner struggles.
This applies to me and everyone around me, an honest critique about our moral and belief systems. Today, I will strive to examine my own heart with greater honesty and extend to others the same grace I hope to receive.
I pray we receive the grace to lead with Charity in our lives and dealings with others.
